Caught in the 한류 Wave

This is my very first entry here on my Korean blog. I have two blogs that I regularly update so far : my fashion blog at blogspot and my personal blog at tumblr. Basically, this blog is going to be a chronicle of my journey into the world of Korean language and culture. Whatever fascinations I may have or encounter while studying Korean, may it be regarding the language itself, music, food, fashion - anything really under the Korean sun, I will post here. .^^.

So I though it would be quite appropriate if my first entry would be about how I became interested in Korean culture and Korean language.

My fascination started around first year college, which was almost two years ago. I think that was when the Hallyu craze was beginning to really penetrate the Philippines. Previously it was only through dramas that the Philippine masses were exposed to Korean culture, but soon with the rise of such groups as the Wondergirls and 2NE1 on the Philippine music charts, Filipinos were becoming more and more exposed to Korean culture. Especially, my generation I would say, since we were the ones that were usually the most perceptive of current trends.

I wasn't really that into Korean culture before, although I've always had a bit of a bias to East Asian Culture. I'm a Linguistics Major Plan C right now, which means, my major language is  Japanese. I admit, Japanese culture and language would always be my first love, as since my childhood I've always had a liking to it. Korean however comes as a close second.

So, how did I become interested in Korean again?

One word: BIGBANG

(picture not mine)

Yep, this is them - BIGBANG. That's Sengri, Daesung, TOP, GD  and Taeyang.

When I watched the Lollipop video for the LG Phone of the same name, I totally fell in fan girl mode because of - well, actually it was TOP at first, but then along the Kpop ride, GD became my favorite. Now, if I post some BIGBANG info here I think it'll be way too long, so I'll just stick with this: (This was taken from an interview I did for my friend from UPLB, for one of her papers.)

1.       Among the many K-pop singers, who is your ultimate favorite? Why?

Without a doubt, my favourite K-pop singer (well, band actually) is BIGBANG. They’re the first K-pop group that I really found myself interested in. I like them for a lot of reasons. One is that each member shines in his own way, unlike in some other K-pop groups where you can’t really appreciate each member individually; you can just see them as a group. Each member has done a solo project and each of the members’ projects got great responses from the fans. They’re a very tight knit group, and I love the fact that they had to train for a long time before they debuted.  BIGBANG’s Leader G-Dragon actually trained in YG Entertainment since he was thirteen years old, along with co-member Tae Yang. BIGBANG is really an ‘artist’ group, not merely an ‘idol’ group. They’re in it for the music, and not the fame.
P.S. They’re all very cute too. ^.^

So, I guess that's my answer right there. I was a total fan girl for a while, I still am a big fan up to now, but things have been really hectic in my academics and organizations and other personal things that I don't have quite enough time to spazz. Heehee. But still, whenever I see GD I'm like *drools*

So here are some of the Kpop CDs I have or rather was fortunate enough to buy. :))

G-dragon's first debut album - Heartbreaker.
Had this shipped all the way from Korea.

I even have a huge poster that went along with it. It looked like this. Except WAY bigger. :)

BIGBANG's first Japanese album. Bought this in the Philippines. This was the Asian edition or something if I remember correctly.

ガラガラGo! - BIGBANG (courtesy of YouTube)

This was the second video of BIGBANG that I watched - Gara Gara Go. Their first Japanese single. Since I was studying Japanese at that time (till now) listening to their songs helped me a lot.

I got interested in 2AM because of their song "I Did Wrong". After that, basically, I just became a fan. They're pretty kooky guys for ballad singers ESPECIALLY Jo Kwon. I watched We Got Married and totally fell in love with the Adam couple. (Jo Kwon of 2AM and Ga-in of Brown Eyed Girls)

Also, I was able to watch 2AM Live! They came to the Philippines last May and my friend Tel (who is my classmate in Korean class) and I watched their show. Awesome.

Lastly, there's this.

GD and TOP's CD. It's really, really cool. Very spazz worthy. The white hair's a bit off but TOP's pulling it off. :))

So that's it for my very first entry here! Look forward to more explorations into the world of Korean culture and language updates (probably heehee) .^^.
